A:

There are various ways to achieve this goal.

One approach is to use a Service Broker. The idea is to define a message which is understood by a process that could then either:

replace the content of the master data
synchronize the master data

In this approach, master data is effectively treated as a set of data that can be changed at runtime. It is often depicted as being made of various “contexts” (entities, attributes, flags, etc.) that form a DAG. There is no standard for such approach.

Another approach is to use a Content Synchronization tool. The idea is to synchronize (or migrate) the master data from the source database to the target database. Examples of tools with this kind of feature include Clover Data Catalog. In this approach, master data is not altered (most likely does not have a DAG structure), but rather the data contained within master data records are synchronized. The synchronization is triggered by a pre-determined event, where the event is defined by the master data vendor. For instance, given a purchase order, you can just “press” the button to synchronize the data for a given master data record, or you could program a workflow that uses a trigger to do the same.

I would recommend using a service broker approach since the service broker pattern is easier to use, and can be easily integrated with other tools (e.g. if you need to get a predefined content, or use the services broker queue interface to update master data). Additionally, a service broker will allow you to integrate with data sources that are not in your master data database (e.g. data warehouse, external systems, etc.)
Note: I would not recommend using a service broker approach if the goal is to update master data. For instance, if you are using a service broker to change a given master data item, you might as well just alter the given master data
