AutoCAD LT was released in 1994 as a version of AutoCAD that ran on an embedded DOS operating system. AutoCAD LT is mostly used for 2D drafting. Since it is a DOS application, it can also run on MS-DOS PCs. Its application interface is therefore similar to that of MS-DOS programs, such as MS-Draw. AutoCAD LT runs on many operating systems, including Windows XP, Windows 7, and various Linux distributions.

AutoCAD is still a major CAD program, with over 12 million registered users.

What is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is a commercial 2D/3D CAD application from Autodesk, offering drafting, architectural, design, and engineering capabilities.

Applications like SolidWorks or Autodesk Revit offer CAD functionality with much more capability and complexity. AutoCAD’s software was originally designed for drafting: drawing shapes and lines, moving or rotating them, and displaying them in a perspective view. However, its users quickly found many different ways to use it. One popular use is for creating architectural drawings, since the software allows you to create precise plans, such as floor plans.

Many other features are included in AutoCAD, such as digital surface modeling, 3D modeling, 3D modeling tools, text editing, digital imaging, DWG (drawing) import/export, and more. AutoCAD also supports many other file formats, including Office document file formats (including PDFs), raster (image) formats, and vector (line) formats.

In the early years of its release, AutoCAD had many limitations. For example, it had limited image editing features, had very limited path-based drafting tools, and it was not natively Windows-based. Although these limitations have been removed in later versions of AutoCAD, the software continues to be widely used, due in large part to its ease of use and the fact that it is free to licensed users.

AutoCAD 2016

AutoCAD 2016 is the latest major release of the AutoCAD family of products. It was officially released on March 14, 2016, and is only available for the Mac platform. It has some new features that are exclusive to the Mac version of AutoCAD, including floating toolbars, ink, shared libraries, and a new design review feature. You can read more about the release in our AutoCAD 2016 review.

The last two items support the interchangeability of files between Autodesk products. For example, a drawing created with AutoCAD can be exported into Microsoft Windows Draw using the Windows.dxf import. Alternatively, a drawing created with AutoCAD can be converted into the equivalent DXF format using the AutoCAD converter.

Influence of side-chain mobility on the conformation of residues in a helix in vitro: the acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo californica.
Acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo electroplax has been studied by a molecular dynamics approach to investigate how the mobility of side chains in alpha-helices influence the local conformation of the residues in the backbone. The mobility of the side chains in the helix is described by the order parameter, calculated from the autocorrelation functions of the trajectories. These autocorrelation functions show the side-chain mobility in terms of both the fluctuations of the R-group (side-chain) and the Y-group (C-C dihedral angles of the backbone). The definition of the order parameter is based on the normal mode analysis of the conformational mobility of the side chains. The results are interpreted in terms of a simple model of the acetylcholine receptor structure. In addition to the ordering of the side-chain motions, the acetylcholine receptor contains three regions which have little mobility, corresponding to residues in the loops and the helices. The results indicate that the order parameter of the backbone is a more appropriate measure of the mobility of the residues in the protein. By calculating the density of the order parameters for the backbone, we can identify regions in the molecule which have a similar mobility of the backbone.Princeton (disambiguation)

Convert 2D drawing objects to 3D models

Drawing objects can be converted into 3D models with the AutoCAD® 2019 and AutoCAD 2023 to aid in your 3D modeling and animation processes. The ability to create your own custom 3D models is now expanded to include insertable objects such as designs and engineering schematics.

Efficient copying and archiving

When you have saved a drawing as an AutoCAD Template (acadTemplate) or published a drawing to CD or DVD (acadPublish), you can view, print, and archive your drawing as an acadTemplate or acadPublish using a variety of applications from within the drawing.

Simple mouse movements, brushes, and layers

Improve the speed and efficiency of drawing by setting the Dynamic Input HotKey to Ctrl + Cmd + MouseMove. Define the movement speed with four different dither amounts. (video: 1:22 min.)

Print options improved

You can now use the Duplex/Odd-Even DocuPrint settings to more easily print 3D drawings. When using this option, you can choose to print the drawing on one or both sides. You can also choose to print the drawings on one or more sides of a piece of paper, and to print both sides of the paper and a cover page. (video: 1:37 min.)

New modeling tools and features

Our engineers have been working to expand the standard AutoCAD modeling tools to support industrial and mechanical design processes. The AutoCAD® 2023 release includes dozens of new modeling tools and features. New features include a 3D text tool, which enables you to import text and set its position in space. These features also allow you to edit text in 3D. A new freeform 3D wireframe tool now enables you to draw 3D elements quickly and easily. Finally, new 2D/3D joints and features for drafting with rulers, protrusions, and edges have been added to the Drafting toolbox.
